My daughter is going through a weird stage right now. Half child, half teenager. One day totally tomboy, the next a diva. The hormones are doing crazy things. One week her face will be clear, the next acne is raging. One day she is in ball shorts and a stained t-shirt, the next day she is in heels and the biggest earrings you can find. We don't always agree with what looks the best, but as long a she is decent, this mom is picking her battles. I haven't been in youth ministry for almost twenty years and not learned a thing or two about kids and their relationship with their parents. Am I perfect? No way. However, I have learned that a little give and take goes a long way...
I brought in a stack of clothes for Kayla the other day. Cute shirts, that a friend was going to sell at a yard sale and let me have a look first. When I brought them in, Kayla didn't seem too interested, although I thought I had picked out several cute things. (I was especially happy that I got twelve pieces of named brand clothing for cheap. Some things still had tags on them.) Truth is, I know my daughter... today she decides to go through them (on her own) and model each shirt for me. (Luckily she is still willing to get mom and dad's approval on how things fit!) I just smiled as she came in asking me about each shirt and how she could wear each piece. She was in a "girly" mood today.
However, I can't be too frustrated with her on the off days, the sloppy "I don't care days" for I have many of them myself. And my daughter the quick thinker, always with a comeback. When asked about her appearance, she has an answer for everything. Here lately it has been the "it is not fair!" remarks.
Here are several Kayla quotes you might enjoy...
"Who was the idiot who decided that women needed to shave everything to be beautiful?! And a man just has to shave his face only if he wants to. Girl's with porcupine legs are considered not cool, while men with a day old beard are considered hot!"
"Mom, I'm having a BAD HAIR DAY!!! Why is it that a man looks great with a shaved head, but if a woman has a shaved head, she is considered a cancer survivor only."
"If a boy has acne, nobody says much unless it is really, really bad. A girl has one pimple and everyone wants her to pop it or cover it up with concealer."
"How come a boy can come in from playing sports and stink, and girls still drool all over him, yet a girl stinks and she is teased for having bad body odor!"
"And what about Bras, Mom! I know we need them but they are uncomfortable sometimes. Guys don't have to worry about all that and can even go without a shirt!"
"PAntyhose...HATE them! It is like putting my legs in jail!"
"And what about periods?! (She would die if she read this quote right now, but I smile every time!) I know, I know men do not have the blessing of giving birth. But I am a kid, I don't want a baby right now! (Thank you Lord!) Why can't we wait to "start" when we get married! (Oh baby, if only...)"
You know, she really does have a point, bless her heart. Although, I would laugh to the point of hysterics, it really is too bad my hubby doesn't have to wear a wig and tights like they did in George Washington's time, just every once in a while. Just to be fair... :)

OH that girl.
She makes me smile all over myself.
I'm with her on all those quotes!! Life just isn't fair...
oh the joys of being a teen...
Y'know, I think I'd pay good money to see Kev in a GW wig and tights! Ha!
I agree with Kayla.
Amen Sister!
Yall coming up this summer anytime! if so hollar at me! would love to see you
Sis,
Now, just remember that your ole' man does at times understand the difficulties of wearing some uncomfortable clothing. Remember my George Washington look is not without sacrifice. The wig is like a steam room, the short pants and knee length socks and buckle shoes not made for comfort.
You do it to make an impression, to help your character develop more believably. Isn't that the bottom line often for what we do in REAL life, too?
Love you, and your KAYLA Character,
Jim-Dad
Just blog hopping and enjoyed reading yours....I love making new blog friends and love looking at all the different blog designs.
That is funny! Love the comment about the pantyhose. Hilarious!
Oh I feel her pain!!! She's got some great points!!!
Found your blog from one of my college friends (either Mer or Sus, not sure which). I have enjoyed reading. Your daughter is right on all accounts!
I love the comments your Kayla makes about things not being fair. She is right ya know. So far my 12 year old hasn't said any of that, but I know she doesn't like panty hose.
Happy day, have a great week,
Nannette
It really is hard growing up, sometimes, isn't it. I know it's hard to face the mood swings when we can hardly contain our own, but thanks for the gems to hold on to today; for they remind me of my own dtr and our "angsty" times.
