I wasn't a die hard fan of either Michael or Farrah Fawcett, however they were still a part of my growing up years. I can remember pretending to be able to dance in my room, to the beat of "Billie Jean" and "Thriller." And as for Farrah, well I was one of those little girls who played "Charlie's Angels" with her friends in the backyard. Memories like those are woven into who we are. It is hard not to be sad when little pieces of your childhood start to fade away.
Yet, while trying to attempt to answer my son's question, I'm left searching the "whys" myself. Why do we care so much? Why do we get all excited about celebrity spottings, backstage passes and all the juicy gossip that goes with life in the limelight? At the end of the day, what does being a member of someones fan club actually get you? Am I a better person because I have shaken the hand of someone famous? Does it lift my status if I happen to share something in common with someone whose name can be found in lights?
Truth is, at the end of the day, what makes a "star" by Hollywood's standards, doesn't really get you anywhere in the end. My pastor said it best the other day when he said "We put so much emphasis on Michael Jackson and his talent and how many records he has sold, yet he died depressed and in debt. Farrah was the poster queen for beauty, yet died from a disease that took that outer beauty away. What are you living for?"
What am I living for? We all give our lives to something. What do I spend the majority of my time doing, thinking about or how do I spend my money? When I obtain what I have given my life to, what will I have? How will I be remembered?
I think it is safe to say that we would all like to be talented, rich and beautiful. Yet, as we have learned in the last few weeks, those things don't always make you have a "happily ever after" ending.
It is important as we go through life working hard, raising families and doing our best to stay fit and looking young, that we don't forget what really is important. These things are not bad in and of themselves. God calls us to work hard, love each other and see ourselves as His temples. No the problem comes when we end up worrying too much about the things of this world and outer beauty, that we forget to work daily on our hearts. The Bible clearly says we can only serve "one master." I am realizing that daily I have a choice to make on who or what that master is...
Hmmm..."why do people care so much?" It is certainly something to think about...
"whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not men. Since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." Colossians 3:23-24

Sis,
Thanks for providing me with another illustration for my sermon - timing was beautiful, for I was just in the midst of preparing it for Sunday. My message: The Tenth Commandment, Thou shalt not covet.
Your sharing and biblical base are right on target, as usual. How you have approached Jordan's question is the best answer I can think of.
I Love You,
Jim-Dad
Yes, I too was one of those little girls that played Charlie's Angels in the yard with my sister or friends.
And I was caught doing the moonwalk while bowling two weekends ago. Yep!
But you're right... what do we make our "god" and what are we living first? PRIORITIES!!! Thanks for this post. I think I may mention it to my youth group in tomorrow night's lesson. =0) I loved what your pastor said.
Great post!
Wow Mich! This was a great post! Do we care because we idolize? Mostly think Yes! It is sad! The only one worthy of our honor is God alone!
This was great!

Great post! Thanks for the reminder and the important thoughts behind it. I hope you have a beautiful day!

Good words.
Have I told you lately how proud I am to have you as my sister?
I am.
I think we can see what we care about when we see what gets most of our attention, most of our money, most of our time.
The media just gives so much attention and glamorizes their lives. But I do not think it would be fun to have no freedom, to have your every move watched and opened up to somebody being critical.
You are right, it is a daily choice. To Whom will we give our attention to that day? Whose values will we live out in our lives....the Lord's or the worlds?
Oh Mich, well said, well said. I just read most of it to my 12 year old daughter.
Thanks for sharing your heart. You truly speak with wisdom that comes from the Lord.

Powerful post, dear one!
Human beings get caught up in the daily barrage of images or news of the rich and famous and their extraordinary lives. As a result, too many people try to try to imulate them and go down wrong paths or try to be ultra thin to be like them, ending up miserable or worse. We need to be "who we are" and keep our eye on the "real" prize....our Heavenly Father.
Luvya!

That post was awesome and so true. I want to be found faithful and serving the Lord with all my heart. That is all that matters...
It is definitely something we should all think about! Love is one thing. Placing people up on pedestals of worship is another! Only God is worthy of our worship! Amen!
Thank you, now I need to work a little harder on the making from scratch. I still buy boxed rice-a-roni and chicken alfredo and I know I should be making my own.
