HELP!!! What is a mom suppose to do?!!!

My son brings home the piles of notes from school, for me to read, sign and send back.

Homework... check.
Test grades...check.
Field trip at the end of the month...check.
Permission for flu shot....???

To get or not to get seems to be the big question. Our health department will be at our schools giving free vaccinations at the end of the month, for both the seasonal and swine flu. Great idea.
OR is it?

I have no problem with my kids getting the regular old seasonal flu shot that they come out with every year. My problem is with the new vaccine they are giving. What is a mom to do when half the doctors in town say we wouldn't get it, yet my doctor gave it to his own kids. What do you do when one news station reports that the medical professionals are not backing the vaccination, yet our children's hospital is on another station saying we need to get it. What do you do when one set of people say it is not an "old enough, studied enough" vaccination, while the parents of a five year old or a young healthy football player die from the terrible illness...???

I still haven't decided how to sign my paper. Doing a lot of praying about it.

In the meantime, what is your opinion? Are your kids getting vaccinated or have they already been?

It is scary, for it seems you are "darned" if you do and "darned" if you don't.

Sis,
The only answer I have is take the advice of a doctor you trust to have the best wisdom on the issue. I've heard a little difference of opinion, but don't really know the risks involved myself.

Sorry, not much help. I may check out what's being said, but I suppose I still have to be the one who decides.

Love you,
Jim-Dad

Mich,

I am not getting it, nor is anyone in our home. I have an auto-immune disease therefore it is best not to put something (poison) in my body that may further compromise my system.

If you should not give it to someone with a compromised immune system why give it to a healthy one?

I am certainly not suggesting for you or your kids not to get it. I just think there is much to think about and pray about when considering it.

Blessings, andrea

Mich,

I think Jim offers some wise counsel. It's hard to say with 100% completely accuracy what we should be doing anymore. We take prescriptions without question, researching the effects and it seems like lately there are more and more drugs being recalled that weren't so safe after all.

Ugh.

We're not getting it. But we don't get the regular flu shot either.

Let me know what you decide.

Love you.

Oh, this is so tough. I have gone back and forth back and forth on this. I always hesitate with teh regular flu shot, too. Actually none of us got it last year and we did not get the flu either. (We just all took vitamins and ate a lot of yogurt, washed our hands a lot, etc.). My son has severe allergies and respitory problems, so I have really debated whether he needs it. I think my husband and I have settle on no for the H1N1 vaccine. This helped me settle it a bit. http://homefirst.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=376:swin-e-flu&catid=1&Itemid=19
It's tricky. Pray!

The only one in our family who gets the regular flu shot is Agent. The rest of us get nothing. I think the less things we put in our body the better. WE pray alot more for our health this time of year and take echinacea & vitamins. I just don't trust that swine flu shot either.

My mom always used to get the flu right after she got her vaccine. I never got mine before and I won´t either now.
talking about the swine flu vaccine with my pediatrician she told me she wouldn´t take it if they made her. she said they put it out too fast and that she doesn´t think that it is tested enough... I don´t know...

I had a serious reaction to the original swine flu shot back in 1974. The Navy required it no ifs ands or objections. I've also been immunized for typhoid fever, diphtheria, measles, bubonic plague, cholera and small pox with no problems. But you couldn't get me to take another flu shot even on a dare.
Funny how the school needs permission to give your son a flu shot. But they can send you daughter to get an abortion with no notice whatsoever.

I know what you mean, I read an article by a doctor who said he wouldn't give it to his kids, and then another doc says he would.

The thing is, you can take the flu shot and trust the Lord to keep you safe, and not take the flu shot and trust the Lord to keep you safe. Whatever decision you make after praying about it, you can trust Him to lead you.

I imagine next year they will even put it in the regular flu shot, I hear they almost did that this year but ran out of time or something?

I take a regular flu shot for my asthma, but at this point I am not going to take the H1N1 shot. That's because I just don't know enough about it yet to make a decision.

So I guess I have to think and pray about it.

Hmmm....I've never gotten a flu shot, nor have my kids. I never really thought much about it. I just try not to do anything like that that they aren't required to have. I don't know why. Sorry I'm not much help!

My idea was that there are different types of flu and I didn't figure the shot would cover all of them anyways. I could be completely wrong....that was just my reasoning, I guess.

Man, I feel the same way. Last week on 20/20 the story was about a young woman who got the vaccine, and now she can't stand or walk without wobbling. She can only walk backwards! I think I would rather my family has the flu, rather than end up like this poor girl.

My kids are NOT getting it and neither am I. I think it's all too new and I don't like trusting "new" things.

Besides, one of our friends' little girls got the shot and the next day was SICK with it. I'd rather take my chances and let my body fight it off NOW. I think the strain will get worse and worse, so I'm gonna let us get it NOW and build up those immunities if that's what God sees fit. =0)

I agree...this is a tough one because medical experts disagree. I got a seasonal flu shot this year as did my husband. He travels all over the world and is in a medical business so is often in hospitals and his company recommended it for him.

I've never had a flu shot and taught school for many years but last year (I wasn't working) I got the flu and it was a full month before I felt completely back to normal. I take essentially no medication and think twice before I take even a tylenol for a headache. I've always been very heatlthy.

My kids are in college (one is coming home today for a couple of days of tlc on her fall break-she's bringing a respirtory infection with her)...we have advised our kids to get the seasonal flu shot this year but are holding off on the H1N1 for now.

I think you can do all you can to eat right, wash hands, steer clear of obviously sick individuals pray often and listen to your most trusted doctor. We don't really have enough knowledge to be guaranteed that whatever decision we make will be the right one.

Mich, all I can tell you is that we had both of our teenage grandsons, of whom we have custody, vaccinated with the regular flu virus last week. We don't have the H1N1 vaccine in our area yet but when we do I plan to get them both vaccinated if I can. Since they are both healthy otherwise and in their teens, they will probably be at the end of those who are permitted to get it. This is just one of those things that you have to pray about and then decide what is right for you. Whatever your decision, don't let anyone make you feel guilty for your choices. Your know your kids better than anyone.

God Bless,
Mimmy

I have never given my kids a flu vaccine. And, I am not going to this year either. I really don't get it at all. If the shot for the flu is a vaccine, why do people have to get it every year? Shouldn't you be immune once you get the shot? I don't think so really. I know people who have gotten the shot and got the flu right after it. Hello? That makes no sense!! I thought we were trying to avoid that happening.
I like what Nan said about trusting God. No matter what we do, we have to trust Him and He is the one that is going to keep us safe not drugs!! :)
